Kid Designed Pretzels

  • 1 1/2 Cup warm water
  • 1 package active dry yeasts
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • 2 1/4 Cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 eggs , mixed with 2 Tbsp water
  • coarse salt
Measure the warm water into a small bowl. Stir in the sugar and the yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and the salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix with a wooden spoon until the dough gets stiff. Sprinkle some extra flour on the counter and turn your dough out onto floured surface. Knead the dough about 20 times by folding the dough over and over on itself. Place the dough back into the large bowl, cover it with a towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. Divide the dough into 20-30 equal balls, about the size of a golf ball. Use extra flour on your hands if the dough is sticky. Roll each ball with your hands into a log about as thick as your thumb. Shape the logs into all different shapes, hearts, snails, fish, pretzels, initials - anything!

Preheat the oven to 400 ℉. Place your creations on a baking sheet. Mix the egg and water and brush each creation with the egg glaze. Sprinkle with the coarse salt and place in the oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes until they are hard and brown. Cool on a rack. If you prefer softer pretzels bake for only about 15 minutes.
